GARDEN CITY HOSPITAL NAMED ONE OF AMERICA’S 100 BEST HOSPITALS FOR ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY

Among top five percent in the nation for overall orthopedic services in 2020

Garden City, MI – October 30, 2019 – Garden City Hospital is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery™ in 2020 according to a national study by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals. Garden City Hospital is a member of Prime Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading hospital systems for clinical excellence. Garden City Hospital is the only hospital in its region to receive this designation.*

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states.

In addition to having been named among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for orthopedic surgery, Garden City Hospital has also been nationally recognized for the following clinical achievements:

  • 100 Top Hospital® by IBM Watson Health™ in 2019
  • Among 13 nationally to receive Everest Award by IBM Watson Health™ in 2019
  • Recipient of Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™ and named among top five percent in the nation for patient safety for four years in a row (2016-2019).
  • Recipient of the Healthgrades Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award™ for two years in a row (2019-2020).
  • Five-star recipient by Healthgrades for the following services: pacemaker procedures (2018-2020), hip fracture treatment (2018-2020), spinal fusion surgery, treatment of stroke and gallbladder removal surgery (2013-2020).
  • BlueCross BlueShield of Michigan designated BlueDistinction® Center+ for knee and hip replacement and maternity care.

“Garden City Hospital is honored to be designated with this prestigious award for orthopedic services,” says Saju George, CEO, Garden City Hospital, Prime Healthcare Michigan Market. “With the area’s population living more active lives, there is a greater need for orthopedic services people can trust. We are proud to be a resource that our community can count on for high quality care. Thank you to our orthopedic surgeons, physicians, rehabilitation specialists and entire team of healthcare professionals who work tirelessly together to provide better outcomes for our patients so they can get back to the things they love. Without them, this recognition would not be possible.”

These achievements are part of findings released in the Healthgrades 2020 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates the importance of hospital quality to both hospital leaders and consumers. Additionally, from 2016 through 2018, patients treated at hospitals who have received the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award™ for orthopedic surgery have, on average, a 39.7 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

“As consumers navigate their health, it is important to consider a number of factors, including hospital quality, before deciding where to access care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ for orthopedic surgery recognizes those hospitals that have proven their dedication to quality care and exceptional outcomes over time and we applaud their efforts and achievement.”

Garden City Hospital credits this achievement to a commitment towards clinical excellence. This comes as a result of investment in resources for patient safety, recovery and comfort, including a state-of-the-art surgical facility, renovated operating rooms with new booms and lights, brand-new private patient recovery rooms and new 4K technology. This also represents Garden City Hospital’s excellence in providing quick care with better outcomes. Patients who come to Garden City Hospital ER with a hip fracture have the advantage of an available on-call orthopedic surgeon to schedule surgery within 48 hours of arrival, helping provide them with good results and reducing their risk of acquiring other serious conditions, especially in elderly patients.

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
