Garden City, MI, May 2, 2016 – New Hospital Safety Scores, which assign A, B, C, D and F letter grades to hospitals nationwide and provide the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S. health care system, were announced today by The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog. Garden City Hospital was one of 798 hospitals to receive an A, ranking among the safest hospitals in the United States.
As part of the commitment to patient safety and positive outcomes, Garden City Hospital has instituted forward thinking and cutting edge tools to enable staff to more accurately and appropriately deal with issues that may arise. According to Saju George, CEO of Garden City Hospital, “This recognition is a true testament to our staff and physicians’ dedication and commitment to provide quality patient care. We continually strive to invest in quality and safety initiatives to benefit our community. We have had a transformative journey at Garden City Hospital and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.”
Garden City Hospital’s $10 million in safety investment used the 3-T approach: technology, tools and training. A few of the most successful methods include leadership rounding, daily safety huddle, and investments to enhance safety. “Garden City Hospital instituted designated weekly rounding by all leadership to improve dialog amongst staff and increase visibility and accessibility to patients,” continued George. “The daily safety huddle alerts all staff to potential issues regarding patient safety and encourages communication interdepartmentally to address and solve problems.”
“Avoidable deaths in hospitals should be the number one concern of our health care leaders. Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ from Leapfrog are leaders in saving lives, and we commend them and urge their continued vigilance,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.
Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. For the first time, the Hospital Safety Score includes five measures of patient-reported experience with the hospital as well as two of the most common infections, C.diff and MRSA.
