National Study Finds Garden City Hospital in
Top 10 percent in Nation for Overall Orthopedic Services

Garden City, MI, October 31, 2018 – Orthopedic Surgery at Garden City Hospital is among the top 10 percent in the nation, according to a national study by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Garden City Hospital is a member of Prime Healthcare, one of the top health systems in the United States for clinical quality.

Garden City Hospital is the only hospital in Detroit (Detroit defined by the CBSA) and Wayne County to achieve the Healthgrades 2019 Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award™.

From 2015-2017, patients treated at hospitals receiving the Orthopedic Surgery Specialty Excellence Award have, on average: 37.9% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. * “With so many choices for care, consumers often find that their health journey can be difficult to navigate,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Information about hospital quality is helpful as they make decisions for their health, and Garden City Hospital has distinguished itself as an exceptional organization for orthopedic surgery.”

“This achievement is significant for our patients, their families and the community our hospital serves. When it comes to bone and joint conditions, we are committed to getting people back to what they do and love. This is why we have placed an emphasis on our orthopedic services,” said Saju George, CEO of Prime Healthcare Michigan Region. “We congratulate our orthopedic surgeons, physicians, rehabilitation specialists and entire team of healthcare professionals for their hard work and dedication in making this recognition possible. We are honored to receive this award.

Garden City Hospital was also recognized for the following clinical achievements:

  • Five-Star Recipient for Pacemaker Procedures for two years in a row (2018-2019)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Hip Fracture Treatment for two years in a row (2018-2019)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Gallbladder Removal Surgery for seven years in a row (2013-2019)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Sepsis in 2019
  • Recipient of the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™ for three years in a row (2016-2019)
  • Named among the top five percent in the nation for Patient Safety for three years in a row (2016-2018)

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
