About the Program
Residency Overview
This is a five-year categorical residency program beginning with PGY-1 level of training. The program’s emphasis is on community-based general surgery. Out-rotations provide additional experience in Trauma, Surgical Intensive Care, Vascular Surgery, ENT, Hepatobiliary, Surgery Oncology, Pediatric Surgery and Transplant. The program is geared toward a hands-on approach with teaching in the operating suite and at the bedside. Residents work closely with a core group of surgeons and have progressive responsibility as they gain knowledge and skill. Residents also assist in the education and supervision of junior house staff and medical students on service.
The General Surgery Residency at Garden City Hospital is Fully Accredited by the ACGME.

Program Director
Richard Spinale, DO
Dr. Richard Spinale is the Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at Garden City Hospital. For the last 39 years, he has been a General Surgeon at GCH with a very busy practice. 32 years ago, he became the Program Director for General Surgery and has been training residents to go on to become great surgeons and clinicians. He is an assistant Professor of Surgery at Michigan State University, Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgery, and an Associate Professor of Surgery at Ohio University.
Associate Program Director
Angad Pordal, MD
Dr. Angad Pordal is a board certified general surgeon. After graduating with a Doctor of Medicine from Northeast Ohio Medical University, he completed his surgical residency at Ascension Providence Hospital where he served as Academic Chieft Resident during his final year. His interests include surgical education and resident curriculum and he previously initiated the robotic curriculum at Ascension Providence during his residency. He also received the distinguished Resident Teacher of the Year Award during his chief year.

Our rotation block diagrams are based upon educational requirements established by Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our rotation curriculum includes:
PGY-1
- 9.5 months of General Surgery
- 1 month of Internal Medicine Critical Care Medicine
- 2 weeks of Anesthesia
- 2 weeks of GI
- 2 weeks of Radiology
PGY-2
- 4 months of General Surgery
- 2 months of General Surgery – Corewell Health
- 2 months of Trauma – Sinai Grace
- 2 months of Surgical Critical Care – DMC
- 2 months of Hepatobiliary Surgery – Ascension Providence
PGY-3
- 5 months of General Surgery
- 1 month of General Surgery – Corewell Health
- 2 months of Vascular Surgery
- 1 month of ENT
- 1 month of Trauma – Sinai-Grace
- 1 month of Pediatric Surgery – Children’s Hospital of Michigan
- 1 month of Transplant Surgery
PGY-4
- 4 months of General Surgery
- 2 months of Vascular Surgery
- 2 months of Hepatobiliary Surgery – Ascension Providence
- 2 months of Trauma Surgery – Sinai-Grace
- 2 months of Pediatric Surgery – Children’s Hospital of Michigan
PGY-5
- 10 months of General Surgery
- 2 months of General Surgery – Corewell Health
