Curriculum

The TY rotations are based upon educational requirements established by Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). These requirements include:

Core Clinical Rotations

During the Transitional Year residency training at Garden City Hospital, each resident is expected to develop strong clinical skills during a year that emphasizes experience in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine plus approved elective rotations. Residents must demonstrate proficiency in comprehensive patient evaluation, assessment and reporting skills. They must also develop their differential diagnosis and test interpretation skills and begin to assume increased responsibility for the management of assigned patients.

Expectations for Rotations:

During the rotations in disciplines offering fundamental clinical skills, the Transitional Year residents should:

  • Improve skills in medical history taking and performing complete examinations on patients with a variety of illnesses
  • Become familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with routine and complex medical problems
  • Develop differential diagnoses for symptom complexes and develop a rational and cost-effective plan for definitive diagnosis
  • Improve knowledge of appropriate therapies based on the etiology, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of various diseases
