What is Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure used to look inside the body with an endoscope, a thin, flexible tool with a camera and light attached to it. Endoscopy allows doctors to look for inflammation, tumors, infection and bleeding often revealing problems that do not show up on x-rays and often eliminating the need for exploratory surgery. Endoscopic procedures are performed with I.V. sedation.Doctors will often recommend endoscopy to evaluate or diagnose:

Constipation and Fecal Incontinence
Hiatal Hernia
Diseases of the Pancreas, including Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis, Hereditary Pancreatitis, Pancreatic Cancer and Pancreatic Cysts
Esophageal Bleeding, Cancer, or Strictures
Colon Cancer
Gastrointestinal Ulcers and Bleeding
Heartburn and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
