What is Endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure used to look inside the body with an endoscope, a thin, flexible tool with a camera and light attached to it. Endoscopy allows doctors to look for inflammation, tumors, infection and bleeding often revealing problems that do not show up on x-rays and often eliminating the need for exploratory surgery. Endoscopic procedures are performed with I.V. sedation.Doctors will often recommend endoscopy to evaluate or diagnose:
- Constipation and Fecal Incontinence
- Hiatal Hernia
- Diseases of the Pancreas, including Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis, Hereditary Pancreatitis, Pancreatic Cancer and Pancreatic Cysts
- Esophageal Bleeding, Cancer, or Strictures
- Colon Cancer
- Gastrointestinal Ulcers and Bleeding
- Heartburn and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBS), Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis
- Swallowing Disorders
