Surgical Patient Resource Guide

Surgery pre-registration helps ease check-in on the day of surgery. Please call Garden City Hospital Pre-Registration at 734-458-4408 at least one week prior to your scheduled surgery. Please have the following information available when you call:

  • Contact Information (name, address, telephone)
  • Health Insurance Information
  • Social Security Number

You may call to register between 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you are unable to call during these hours, please leave a message with your name and a phone number where you can be reached. We will be happy to return your call.

Pre-Admission Testing

Once you have pre-registered, you will receive a call from the Pre-Admission Testing Department. For any question related to Pre-Admission Testing, call 734-458-3378.

  • Please be ready to give your medical and surgical history, any prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal medications you are taking along with their dosages (print our Patient Medication List to help stay organized), and any allergies you may have. It is important you let the nurse know if you have a Latex allergy.
  • The nurse will determine if your pre-anesthesia assessment can be completed by phone or if an appointment must be scheduled for you to come to the Pre-Admission Testing Department.
  • The nurse will go over pre-surgery instructions, including what medications you can take on the day of surgery, if any, what you should wear, and when you should stop eating or drinking.
  • If you need tests such as lab work, X-rays, or an EKG before surgery, or need to come in to see the nurse, an appointment will be scheduled at the time of your call. If you cannot keep this appointment or need to change the date or time, please call Pre-Admission Testing at 734-458-3378.
  • Your pre-anesthesia assessment and test results will be reviewed by an anesthesiologist prior to your day of surgery in order to verify your readiness for surgery. The anesthesiologist will review your pre-anesthesia assessment with you on the actual day of surgery.

Medication / Diet / Transportation Planning

Patients will receive a call between 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. from a Pre-Op Nurse on the business day before a scheduled procedure. The nurse will review pre-surgery instructions and tell you what time to arrive at the hospital. Additional guidelines for surgery that all patients must follow include:

  • If you are going home after your surgery, please arrange to have a driver stay with you the whole time you are at the hospital.
  • A responsible person needs to stay with you for the first 24 hours after your surgery.
  • Do not drink alcohol for 48 hours prior to surgery.
  • Nothing to eat or drink (including water, gum, or mints) after midnight the day of your surgery.
