Limb Preservation & Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

What is Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)?

PAD is a disease process in which plaque, made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances, builds up and can harden and narrow the blood vessels (arteries), and can lead to a blockage. When this occurs, the blood flow in your arteries going to your internal organs, lower legs and feet decreases. Because PAD can affect major organs in your body, this makes you more susceptible to heart attack and stroke.

Symptoms

PAD can result in a variety of symptoms and secondary issues. It can cause pain, numbness, and swelling of the lower legs and feet. If severe enough, tissue death and possible amputation could be necessary. Fortunately, today, with proper diagnosis or detection, there may be less invasive ways of treating this condition. This is why it’s important to find out if you have this condition and how further damage may be prevented.

Reach out to your physician if you experience:

  • Leg/foot pain when walking and decreases during rest
  • Swelling in lower extremity
  • Leg cramps from poor circulation
  • Limited or no hair growth over toes and lower legs
  • Shiny, thin skin on lower legs/feet
  • Sores or wounds on toes, feet, or legs that heal slowly or not at all
  • History of vascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, smoking
